A sonography certification program equips professionals with the training they need to use an ultrasound machine to capture images of the body’s internal structures. While most commonly associated with obstetrics, training in sonography has many other applications. An ultrasound machine sends out sound waves and creates images from the echoes, providing a physician with a non-invasive way to see internal injuries and abnormalities. A professional that is certified in sonography has the training necessary to operate an ultrasound machine. Most often, a sonography certification program can be completed within two years.
While the prerequisites for enrollment into a sonography certification program may vary widely, most programs require prospective students to have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a science or health-related field. Students must have successfully completed courses such as anatomy, biology, physics and English. Often, a course in CPR is also required.
Students who are enrolled in a sonography certification program will have the opportunity to learn about the various aspects and applications of sonography in both a classroom environment and in a clinical setting. The courses that will be covered include the following: anatomy, principles of sonography, medical ethics, instrumentation, pathophysiology, vascular sonography, abdominal sonography and obstetric sonography.
Types of Sonography Certificates
There are several types of certification programs, providing students the opportunity to choose which program best fits their career goals and aspirations. Some programs are introductory in nature and offer the knowledge and experience necessary to qualify for entry-level positions. Others offer more specialized training and are tailored for professionals who are already working in the field, but wish to become more focused on a specific area of sonography.
Certificate programs include:
- Diagnostic Medical Sonography
- Cardiovascular Technology
- Obstetrics and Gynecology Supplemental Certificate
- Pediatric Cardiac Sonography
Certification in sonography will open many new doors. An introductory sonography training program will allow you to qualify for an entry level position in medical imaging, and by obtaining certification in specialized areas of sonography, you will have the opportunity to advance in your career.
