Certified nursing assistants work directly and constantly with the people who are receiving health care, in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, doctor’s offices and in patient’s homes. According to the US Bureau of Labor, the profession of nursing assistant (also known as healthcare assistants and nursing aides) is the fastest growing in the health care industry and is likely to continue to grow for at least the next ten years.

Mandatory Training
In order to become a certified nursing assistant, you need to complete 75 mandatory hours of training, and to be able to complete a competency examination. You need to do this within the first 4 months of working as a nursing assistant, and then you can take your place on the State registry of certified nursing assistants. Your program will include subject areas such as documentation of patient status and care, communications, infection control procedures, emergency procedures, personal hygiene and other subjects related to your day-to-day work. You can complete formal training to make sure that you pass your examinations easily.

Working as a certified nursing assistant can be a very satisfying job, and the more that you know about the basic skills you will need to develop in your job, the faster you will progress. Certified nursing assistants provide the basic patient care that is the foundation of recovery for every patient, so you need to have good theoretical knowledge and practical skills to be as effective as possible in your role as a certified nursing assistant.
