Surgical Technician Certification
 Surgical technicians are important members of the surgical team. Of course, the team revolves around the main surgeon, but the surgeon depends on the operating room staff to help make the procedures successful.
Surgical technologists are also known as scrubs. They work with the anesthesiologists and nurses who make up the team. The surgical technician is responsible for ensuring the sterility and cleanliness of the operating room prior to a surgical procedure. They also work with the other team members to make sure the appropriate equipment and instruments are in place. During the surgery they make sure all equipment is functioning and the needed drugs and supplies are in place.
Scrubs also work directly with patients. They wash and prepare the areas to be operated on and make sure they patients are ready for surgery. They may be responsible for transporting patients to the operating room and then to the recovery area after the surgery. The certified surgical technicians also assist the nurses in observing patients’ pulse rates, heartbeats, breathing, blood pressure, temperature and other important information during the surgery.
The technicians are also called on to give direct assistance during surgery. They may hold instruments such as retractors and clamps, prepare the suturing thread, and make sure the operating room lights are focused on the area the surgeon needs to see. An important function performed by surgical technicians is keeping track of sponges, gauze pads, clamps and needles, to make sure none are left inside a patient's incision. |
